- Executive search
- The proactive process of finding, assessing, and securing senior leaders by directly approaching the right people rather than advertising. Read more.
- Retained search
- An engagement in which the search firm is paid across the search to do the work thoroughly, rather than only on placement — aligning the firm with quality of hire. Read more.
- Contingent recruiting
- A model in which a recruiter is paid only if they place a candidate, rewarding speed and volume. Best suited to more junior or high-volume roles. Read more.
- Headhunter
- The informal term for a recruiter who proactively approaches specific individuals for a role — much the same as an executive search consultant. Read more.
- Mandate
- The specific brief for a search — the real challenge of the role, what success looks like, and what the business needs from the leader. Read more.
- Talent mapping
- Research that identifies and profiles the leaders in a given market or function, used for succession, market entry, or future hiring. Read more.
- Leadership assessment
- The rigorous evaluation of a candidate against the specific mandate — judgement, leadership, and fit, not just track record. Read more.
- Shortlist
- The final set of assessed candidates presented to the client — ideally a diverse, merit-based field reflecting the real market. Read more.
- Non-executive director
- A board member without an operational role, providing independent oversight, governance, and counsel. Read more.
- Operating partner
- A senior expert who works across a private equity firm’s portfolio, supporting management and value creation. Read more.
- Interim executive
- A senior leader engaged temporarily and full-time to lead through a gap or a period of change. Read more.
- Fractional executive
- A senior leader who works with a business part-time on an ongoing basis, bringing C-suite expertise for a fraction of the cost. Read more.
- Long-term incentive (LTI)
- A component of executive pay that rewards performance over several years, often the most valuable part of a senior package. Read more.
- Succession planning
- The deliberate work of ensuring a business will have the leaders it needs for the future. Read more.
- Counteroffer
- An offer from a current employer to retain someone who has resigned — one that usually fails to hold. Read more.
- Confidential search
